خلاصه داستان (با اسپویل):

این فیلم بیش از چهار ساعت زمان دارد و روایتی مفصل از وقایع مرتبط با واحد ۷۳۱ ارائه می‌دهد؛ همان مجموعه‌ای از رویدادها که پیش‌تر در سری فیلم‌های Men Behind the Sun نیز به آن پرداخته شده بود.

این نسخه با روایت روسی ساخته شده و به ادعاهایی دربارهٔ فعالیت‌های مرکز مخفی تحقیقاتی ارتش ژاپن می‌پردازد؛ جایی که گفته می‌شود آزمایش‌های غیرانسانی گوناگونی روی انسان‌ها انجام می‌شد.

در این روایت، قربانیان عمدتاً روس هستند و داستان با بخش‌هایی مستندگونه همراه است. یکی از راویان، پزشکی سالخورده به نام آناتولی پروتاسوف است که ادعا می‌کند در دوران دانشجویی پزشکی در نزدیکی واحد ۷۳۱ حضور داشته است. نحوهٔ روایت و واکنش‌های او تضادی عجیب با فضای تلخ و هولناک وقایع ایجاد می‌کند.

بخش نخست فیلم نیز میان بازسازی این رویدادها، صحنه‌هایی با حال‌وهوای سوررئال را در هم می‌آمیزد.

نکته: این فیلم به دلیل نمایش صریح خشونت و آزار، اثری بسیار سنگین و مناسب همهٔ مخاطبان نیست و بر بازسازی جنایت‌های جنگی و پیامدهای غیرانسانی آن‌ها تمرکز دارد.
