پسربچه‌ای یهودی در اروپای شرقیِ دوران جنگ جهانی دوم آواره است و در جست‌وجوی پناهگاه با آدم‌های گوناگونی روبه‌رو می‌شود. او هم به خاطر کودک بودن و هم به خاطر یهودی بودنش آزار می‌بیند. پسر با حیوانات مهربان است و در کنار رنج خودش، شاهد رنج کشیدن آن‌ها نیز هست. فیلم آسیب روانی او را دنبال می‌کند و نشان می‌دهد چنین تجربه‌هایی چگونه می‌تواند آدمی آشفته بسازد.
